PRP Hair Restoration
Hair Restoration
If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from some level of thinning hair or hair loss, you understand just how much of an impact hair loss can have on both your appearance and your self-confidence. For many years, men and women dealing with hair loss were faced with two unfortunate choices, expensive, artificial-looking hair replacement surgery or simply accepting it. Today, there is a significantly improved option that includes non-surgical, minimally invasive hair restoration, utilizing the power of your own body to regenerate damaged hair follicles, so you can actually begin to regrow your own hair.
PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy is an advanced technique for boosting the power and effectiveness of hair regeneration treatments. When used in conjunction with micro-needling, PRP helps to stimulate the hair follicles for healthier, stronger, more robust hair growth. For many years, follicles that were no longer producing hair were thought to be completely dead. However, recent studies now indicate that in many cases, these unproductive follicles are simply dormant, injured, or compromised, but may still be capable of hair growth for 5-8 years after the first signs of appearing “dead”. The powerful growth factors found within your body’s own platelet rich plasma (PRP) activate adult stem cells within these unproductive hair follicles, while also promoting localized cell growth and the formation of new blood vessels to feed the regenerated hair follicles.
Treatment & Results
The typical PRP hair regeneration with micro-needling treatment involves the following steps:
- A small sample of your blood is drawn and processed in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet rich plasma (PRP) and activate the powerful growth factors within the PRP.
- A local anesthetic is applied to the target area to numb that area of the scalp.
- The PRP is injected into the target area, focusing primarily on areas where the hair loss is most severe. The injections are administered using a very fine gauge needle in a matrix pattern across the scalp to maximize the regenerative power of the PRP.
For many individuals, PRP offers amazing new hair growth and improvements in hair thickness and density, in as quickly as two months after the initial treatment, but optimal results will become visible in 4-8 months. Improvement will gradually continue for up to one year.
Although most patients achieve excellent long-term results with just one treatment, follow-up visits (typically every four months) are required to track your progress and to determine whether additional procedures are needed to facilitate optimal hair growth.
Recovery
The recovery process after PRP therapy is usually very easy, and any discomfort can be mitigated with over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen. Some patients may experience mild swelling of the forehead for a day or two after the treatment. Patients should avoid intense physical activity until the swelling has completely subsided. Normal hair washing can resume immediately after the treatment. Recovery times and specific post-treatment instructions will also depend on the required recovery instructions following laser hair restoration.
